چکیده

We present measurements of the thermal resistivity ρ(t,L) (t ≡ T/Tλ − 1) near the superfluid transition temperature Tλ of 4He at saturated vapor pressure and confined in glass capillary arrays with rectangular capillary crosssections of spacing L = 1 μm, width w = 10μm, and length d # 1 mm. We expect the finite-size effect in this rectangular geometry to provide a good approximation to that in the ideal parallel-plate geometry. The data coincide within our resolution with previous measurements for cylindrical capillaries of 1 μm radius, indicating that the finite-size scaling-functions for these two geometries are indistinguishable. This stands in contrast to the scaling functions for static properties which, near the transition temperature, depend on the dimensionality of the confinement. The results are consistent with recent Monte Carlo and spin-dynamics simulations, and with renormalization-group calculations for capillaries with square cross section and t !0.

Magnetic-field-induced finite-size effect in the nigh-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O(7-delta): a comparison with rotating superfluid 4He.

The effect of strong magnetic fields (11 T) on superconductivity in YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) is investigated using high-resolution thermal expansion. We show that the field-induced broadening of the superconducting transition is due to a finite-size effect resulting from the field-induced vortex-vortex length scale. The physics of this broadening has recently been elucidated for the closely related ca...

025301-1 We present measurements of the thermal resistivity t; P; L near the superfluid transition of 4He at saturated vapor pressure and confined in cylindrical geometries with radii L 0:5 and 1:0 m [t T=T P 1]. For L 1:0 m measurements at six pressures P are presented. At and above T the data are consistent with a universal scaling function F X L= 0 x= = 0 , X L= 0 1= t valid for all P ( 0 an...

Critical Ultrasonics near the Superfluid Transition : Finite Size Effects

The suppression of order parameter fluctuations at the boundaries causes the ultrasonic attenuation near the superfluid transition to be lowered below the bulk value . We calculate explicitly the first deviation from the bulk value for temperatures above the lambda point . This deviation is significantly larger than for static quantities like the thermodynamic specific heat or other transport p...

Critical Fluctuation - Induced Thinning of 4 He Films near the Superfluid Transition

We report dielectric constant measurements showing critical fluctuation-induced thinning of 4He films near the superfluid transition. The films are adsorbed on a stack of copper electrodes suspended at different heights above bulk liquid. We calibrate the measurements by assuming that the film thickness away from the transition region at different heights is accurately given by theory. The thin...

Critical Casimir force in 4He films: confirmation of finite-size scaling.

We present new capacitance measurements of critical Casimir force-induced thinning of 4He films near the superfluid transition, focused on the region below Tlambda where the effect is the greatest. 4He films of 238, 285, and 340 A thickness are adsorbed on atomically smooth, N-doped silicon substrates. The Casimir force scaling function theta, deduced from the thinning of these three films, col...
